On the heels of his
award-winning work for the University of Mississippi at Ole Miss
Golf Club, Nathan was retained by the University of Southern
Mississippi to design a short game practice facility for the men's
and women's golf teams.
Originally working closely with
Canebrake CC in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the university was able to
secure a parcel of available land at the back of the existing
practice range at the club where a little-used small chipping green
is currently located. The design called for the existing green and its bunkers
to be demolished and a new green, new bunkers, and a new practice
tee to
be built further west of the existing green for short game practice
to allow for shots up to 100 yards.
However, the
location for the project was moved in early 2010 to Hattiesburg
Country Club where a larger parcel of land was available adjacent to
the existing practice range and shots from up to 130 yards in two
different directions with varying elevations could be possible.
Again working closely with the golf coaches and their staff as well
as the staff at Hattiesburg CC, the new location allowed Mr. Crace
to design a large (10,000+ square feet) chipping/pitching green with
multiple bunkers from multiple elevations and distances as well as a
separate 8,000 s.f. putting green. Watermark has been working on creating 3D images of the
project for the golf teams' marketing purposes and construction
drawings are complete. Construction
is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2010 in time for the facility to re-open
by the fall semester.
