Tupelo, Mississippi is known for more than Elvis Presley.  It's known to golfers in the Southeast as the home to one of the best-kept secrets in golf--Tupelo Country Club.  The first course in Mississippi to change over to ultradwarf greens in the late 1980's, Tupelo CC has hosted numerous statewide tournaments and prestigious amateur events.  But much like other clubs of the same age, the golf course was in need of some updating.  Although it was still in impeccable condition, the members at Tupelo CC have a high standard and knew that investments would soon be needed in everything from irrigation and bunkers to greens and tree removal.  Watermark Golf was called and Nathan began consulting with the club on an ongoing basis to determine the best course of action.  The economic slowdown postponed much of the work that was developed in Nathan's  Master Plan (seen below the photo gallery), but a lake renovation project was completed and in 2010 and in 2011/2012, Phase I of the Master Plan (the practice facility and short course) was completed.

Phase I involved renovating the undersized practice tee, building a new chipping green, and transforming a six-acre parcel of land the club was not using between the back of the range and the 5th tee into the "Short Course" for practicing or playing with family and friends.  Nathan also designed a new practice putting green in an unused greens space near the pro shop because the existing practice putting green will be demolished in Phase II to make room for lengthening the 18th hole.  The practice tee expanded from a small tee where 10-12 golfers had to "cram in" to hit balls into a 300' x 100' sand-capped tee with internal drainage where 30+ golfers can comfortably work on their games, hitting shots to numerous target greens shaped to resemble real-world shots one might encounter in a round of golf.  Nathan's unique "Tri-Fairway Design" for the far end of the range also simulates dogleg left, straight, and dogleg right fairways for golfers to work on driving the ball.  It's a concept that has already been "copied" by other facilities throughout the southeast and beyond.  The Short Course utilizes two double greens and a triple green for members to use, enabling them to practice any shot from green side to 185 yards or to simply play a quick round of 9 par-3 holes.

"The fun part of the short course is that there are no hard and fast holes," Nathan explained before the facility opened for play.  "I intentionally did not design tees on the short course because I wanted golfers to have the flexibility to play holes wherever they imagined and for [golf course superintendent] Jim [Kwasinski] to change mowing lines around so no one would get bored.  The only thing that will limit the golfers' options on the short course will be their own imaginations."

The facility re-opened to rave reviews and several other courses have visited Tupelo CC to see the facility and have subsequently contacted Watermark Golf about helping with their practice facilities.  Nathan has often joked that given the number of practice facilities he has designed in recent years, he is surprised that he still doesn't enjoy practicing himself."
