The City of Muscle
Shoals, Alabama took over the operations of Cypress Lakes Golf Club
and transformed the former private club into an upscale daily fee public facility.
One of the first steps was to replace the bent grass greens with
Mini Verde ultradwarf bermuda grass to improve playing conditions in
the warm summers and decrease maintenance costs. As part of
the transformation, the decision was made to renovate the existing
5,000 s.f. practice putting green that was crammed into a tight
space--limited by existing cart path and utilities to one side and
trees and the 9th green to the other. They called Watermark
Golf/Nathan Crace Design to develop a cost-effective renovation plan and the
end result was an 8,000 s.f. green and the addition of much-needed
cart parking and concrete curbing to keep traffic away from the new
green. Additionally, several trees
near the green that made the turf on the green difficult to manage
were also removed and some mounding was created to provide better
separation between the practice green and the 9th green.
The project also proved to be the
perfect time to transform a previously-abandoned tee complex on the
course into a Mini Verde ultradwarf nursery green. The project
was publicly-bid and completed in just over four weeks and under budget.
began and was completed in the Summer of 2013 and is scheduled to
re-open in the fall after grow-in is complete.
