Copper Mill
G.C. is named Golf Digest's "Best New Affordable Public Course in America!" |
"I'm
giving Copper Mill an A+ on the scales of playability and fun!
This wonderfully designed layout begs you to let the driver
rip, but also demands precise club selection and your best efforts
on approach shots and its unique collection of six testing par three
holes. Treat yourself and play at least one of the awesome 600+ yard
par fives from the tips! Copper
Mill is what golf is supposed to be. It's
challenging and adventurous, but straightforward and fair. A truly
outstanding value, with plenty of smiling helpful folks on
staff."

After being named by
Golf Digest as the "Best New Affordable Public Course in
America" in the January 2005 issue, Copper Mill has also been
named by Golf Digest as "Louisiana's #2 Course Overall" in
Golf Digest's Bi-Annual rankings of best courses in America!
While serving as the Senior Design
Associate for Maxwell Golf Group, our principal architect, Nathan Crace
designed Copper
Mill Golf Club--a new championship caliber course located in the City of Zachary, a
rapidly growing community just 15 minutes north of downtown Baton Rouge.
It would be his final collaboration before "going solo" and co-founding Watermark
Golf. The
combination of links-like shot making design features and contemporary golf course
conditioning at Copper Mill make this course unlike any other in Louisiana. Multiple tees on each
hole make the course fair and challenging for a wide range of players from high
handicappers to those brave enough to test the par-5 12th hole from the championship
tees--where it measures 650+ yards! (cont. below)
The inclusion of native areas and a number of
holes that play around and over pockets of protected wetlands within the property add to
the overall theme of the course--including the "ruins" Mr.
Crace designed that were built on the
par-4 17th hole. The unique combination of three par-3's, three par-4's and three par-5's on
both nines should make Copper Mill not only a memorable golfing experience, but also an
ideal location for a State Amateur or other large tournament. As
evidenced by Golf Digest's selection as the Best New Affordable Public
Course in America, Copper Mill provides a unique and exciting
atmosphere!
Mr. Crace has recently
used the Copper Mill project as a case study for the "Design of
the Golf Environment" class at Mississippi State University,
where he serves as a guest lecturer to students from the Professional
Golf Management, Turfgrass and Agronomy, and Landscape Architecture
programs.
In addition to the design of the
course, Mr. Crace also provided residential land planning services for
the developer at Copper Mill--developing the plan for the establishment of home sites and
other ancillary areas within the development. His administration
of the land planning ensured quality home sites without jeopardizing
the integrity of the golf course. A future phase of Copper Mill calls
for the creation of more home sites centered around an additional three hole
"practice course" and 2+ acre wooded estate lots along the 12th, 13th, 14th, and
5th holes. Photos
of the facility are below and more information can be found at: www.coppermillgolf.com |
