In early
2004, the Warren County Parks and Recreation Commission retained
Watermark Golf/Nathan Crace Design to develop a comprehensive plan for
renovations to the front nine of Clear Creek Golf Course in Vicksburg,
Mississippi. Given the County's limited budget for the project,
the Commission felt as though Watermark Golf could deliver the most
return on their investment through innovative and creative design
techniques and a "hands-on" approach to construction
monitoring. The Clear Creek course was originally built as a
public works project in the late 1970's and was in need of work to
repair greens damaged by a severe soil-borne turf disease. In the process,
Watermark's Principal architect Nathan Crace elected to make the best of a bad situation and entirely
re-build the front nine green complexes--including relocating
three of them to lengthen some holes, increase aesthetics, and improve
safety concerns.
Mr. Crace also elected to utilize the
"California" green technique of greens construction, which has enabled the size of the greens
to more than double that of the original greens on the course within
the budget parameters of this publicly bid project.
In addition to re-working the green complexes, 11 bunkers were added, some tees
were relocated, irrigation was expanded and additional cart paths were
installed. The work has produced some exciting new holes on the
course, which re-opened on Oct. 13, 2004 at a construction cost of
only slightly more than $360,000!
There
are tentative plans to renovate the back nine in the coming years.
